French Foreign Minister: France Firmly Rejects Greenland Sale
(MENAFN) French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Monday emphatically declared that Greenland is "not for sale," following his weekend visit to the autonomous Danish territory. The statement comes amid increasing pressure from the United States, which has asserted claims that Greenland should be considered American soil.
"In the face of the brutalization of the world, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and predatory temptations in the Arctic, France is clear: Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not to be taken," Barrot declared on the social media platform X.
He reiterated France’s commitment to the region, announcing that it will be the "first country in the European Union" to open a consulate in Greenland by early 2026. Barrot also announced the formation of a partnership dialogue committee aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.
"Greenland is a European territory. One does not rebuild the greatness of a nation on the servitude of its neighbors," he stressed.
Barrot further pledged France’s and Europe’s unwavering support to Greenland and Denmark, affirming that they are "not alone" and that France will stand by their side "today and tomorrow."
The French minister’s visit followed a diplomatic move by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, who on Wednesday summoned the US envoy amid reports that American citizens are conducting an influence campaign in Greenland. A Danish broadcaster disclosed last week that at least three US citizens with links to former President Donald Trump and the White House are allegedly trying to sow discord between Denmark and Greenland.
