Utah governor shares updates on killer of Charlie Kirk
Speaking to CNN, Cox described the roommate as "a romantic partner, a male transitioning to female" and stated that they have been "incredibly cooperative" with law enforcement. The governor added that the partner "had no idea that this was happening, and is working with investigators right now."
Authorities identified the suspect on Friday as Utah native Tyler Robinson, who is accused of fatally shooting Kirk at Utah Valley University. Kirk, 31, was killed on Wednesday while speaking to students at the university in Orem, located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.
Regarding Robinson's alleged political motives, Cox said claims that the shooter was "deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology" came from "people around him, from his family members and friends." The governor stressed that he would provide the same information regardless of the suspect's political leaning: "If this was...a radicalized MAGA (Make America Great Again) person, I would be saying that as well."
On Robinson's opinion of Kirk, Cox noted that the suspect had talked about the commentator with relatives but was simply "not a fan." The governor also mentioned that formal charges are expected to be filed on Tuesday, at which point additional evidence will be made available.
