Cambodia detains ten more S. Koreans in crackdown on online scams
The announcement followed the recent repatriation of 64 South Koreans who had been detained in Cambodia over allegations of involvement in digital fraud schemes.
Cho explained at a press briefing that during a crackdown on Thursday, Cambodian law enforcement apprehended approximately 10 South Koreans suspected of participating in the scams. In the same operation, two other South Korean nationals, believed to be victims rather than perpetrators, were rescued. All are scheduled to be returned to South Korea this week.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry has launched a comprehensive review of citizens potentially linked to online scams worldwide and plans to hire 40 additional consular staff to manage such cases. Cho emphasized the importance of close collaboration with Cambodian authorities, stating: “We believe we can respond effectively through close consultations with the Cambodian government.”
Public concern escalated after a South Korean college student was reportedly tortured and killed in August by a criminal group operating online scams in Cambodia. In response, Seoul has intensified diplomatic efforts and investigations, including targeted operations to locate and extract its nationals from criminal networks abroad.
