Ninety-one migrants get rescued by Italy in Mediterranean

(MENAFN) The Italian Coast Guard rescued 91 irregular migrants and recovered the bodies of two others from a distressed vessel drifting near Lampedusa Island in the Mediterranean Sea, authorities reported Sunday.

According to a Coast Guard statement, the operation was initiated after a Frontex surveillance aircraft spotted the boat roughly 16 nautical miles (29.6 kilometers) off Lampedusa. Two patrol boats were dispatched and successfully brought 91 people to safety.

The bodies of two men were discovered inside the boat during the rescue. All survivors were taken to Lampedusa, where medical teams conducted health checks.
Italy’s Interior Ministry reported that 55,948 migrants have arrived by sea in the country from the start of the year through October 17, slightly exceeding the 55,010 arrivals recorded in the same period last year.

The Central Mediterranean route—connecting Italy, Malta, Libya, and Tunisia—remains one of Europe’s busiest and most dangerous migration corridors. Overloaded vessels, dehydration, suffocation, and exposure to engine fumes continue to claim numerous lives each year as migrants attempt the perilous journey to European shores.
