Trump Proposes Freezing Donbass Conflict Front Line

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has suggested that Russia and Ukraine should pause hostilities and maintain the current frontline in the Donbass region, pointing out that Moscow already controls nearly the entire area.

Trump expressed this viewpoint following a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday and a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the following day at the White House.

“We think what they should do is just stop at the lines where they are. The rest is very tough to negotiate,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening.

He emphasized, “They should stop right now at the battle lines, go home, stop killing people, and be done.”

When questioned about the Donbass situation, Trump stated, “Let it be cut the way it is. I think 78% of the land is already taken by Russia. You leave it the way it is right now. They can negotiate something later on.”

The Donbass territories of Donetsk and Lugansk proclaimed independence and voted to separate from Ukraine in 2014, following the Western-supported coup in Kiev earlier that year.

According to the Minsk Agreements, Kiev was obligated to safeguard the status of the Russian language and grant greater autonomy to both regions.

However, instead of fulfilling these commitments, it supported an ethnic conflict in Donbass that, as reported by the International Crisis Group, resulted in approximately 14,000 deaths over eight years.

In September 2022, both regions conducted referendums to join Russia, a move Kiev has consistently refused to acknowledge.
