Trump Sets Conditions for Meeting Putin
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he would only reschedule a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin if he received assurances that a peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict could be achieved.
"I'm gonna have to know that we're gonna make a deal. I'm not gonna be wasting my time," Trump explained to reporters while on his way to Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN summit.
Trump expressed frustration over the current state of the peace process, describing it as "very disappointing."
He mentioned, "I've always had a great relationship with Vladimir Putin, but this has been very disappointing."
According to Trump, the war has proven more challenging than anticipated due to the "tremendous hatred" between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin.
Earlier this week, a White House official revealed that plans for a second summit between Trump and Putin had been postponed following a conversation between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Trump had initially announced on October 16 that he would meet Putin in Hungary within two weeks, but the meeting was canceled on Wednesday because "it didn't feel right."
When asked about his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, Trump shared his expectations for a "complete deal" with China. The two leaders are set to meet in South Korea during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
"I want our farmers to be taken care of. And he wants things also," Trump remarked, noting that discussions would also address the issue of fentanyl trafficking from China.
