Canadian Military Officer Faces Espionage Charges
Master Warrant Officer Matthew Robar was apprehended last week and appeared before a military tribunal on Monday, facing allegations of “communicating special operational information,” violating Canada’s Security of Information Act, and transmitting “special operational information to a foreign entity or to a terrorist group.” These charges carry the possibility of a life sentence.
While the foreign entity involved has not been officially named during court proceedings, sources cited by media outlets have identified it as Ukraine.
Prosecutors claim that between 2023 and 2024, Robar engaged with an unnamed individual affiliated with a foreign intelligence organization, discussing “unconventional activity that involved sensitive techniques.”
The prosecution further asserts that the project required approval from senior commanders, which Robar’s requests repeatedly failed to obtain. Nevertheless, he allegedly persisted in his actions, formed an unauthorized direct connection with the intelligence service, and met the contact abroad without authorization.
A similar case occurred in 2012, when Canadian naval intelligence officer Jeffrey Delisle was convicted of passing classified information to Russia, receiving a 20-year prison sentence.
