US, Ukraine report productive Miami talks despite no breakthrough
The statement came from US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Ukraine’s lead negotiator Rustem Umerov following three days of discussions with European allies. The talks focused on several key issues, including alignment on a 20-point plan, a multilateral security guarantee framework, a US security guarantee framework for Ukraine, and an economic and prosperity plan for the country’s recovery.
Simultaneously, separate discussions have been held between US officials and Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Witkoff said these meetings, which also included Jared Kushner, were “productive and constructive,” adding that Russia remains committed to achieving peace in Ukraine.
The Miami talks are part of ongoing diplomatic efforts, prompted in part by the leak of a 28-point US peace plan that appeared to favor Russia, causing concern among Ukraine and its European partners. While progress has been made on discussions and frameworks, major points of contention remain unresolved, including Russia’s insistence on retaining territories it has seized.
US intelligence sources continue to warn that Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to capture all of Ukraine and reclaim former Soviet territories in Europe, despite his recent remarks to a news outlet stating that there will be no further wars if Russia is treated with respect and its interests acknowledged.
Meanwhile, tensions on the ground persist. Russian officials reported that a Ukrainian drone strike damaged two vessels and two piers in the southern Krasnodar region, causing a large fire. Authorities stated that all crew members were safely evacuated, with some reports indicating that oil infrastructure was the target.
