Google’s larger dataset provides significant advantage in AI sector
While ChatGPT maintains the highest number of monthly active users, surpassing Google’s Gemini, recent analyses indicate that Gemini has outperformed ChatGPT in both user growth and time spent on the platform, as stated by a US-based research firm.
As a historic Internet powerhouse, Google has expanded beyond its search engine to develop platforms like YouTube and the Android operating system. Combined with its dominant position in web search, this gives the company an unparalleled reservoir of data to train its AI systems.
Although this data advantage strengthens Google’s position in AI development, it has also reignited discussions about the potential for the company to create a technological monopoly.
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince emphasized that Google has been the most influential player in Internet history over the past 27 years, according to reports. Prince noted that Google developed tools to monetize web traffic and is now a major force in AI research, merging its search capabilities with artificial intelligence to present formidable competition to rivals.
Prince highlighted that Google currently accesses 3.2 times more web pages than OpenAI, 4.6 times more than Microsoft, and 4.8 times more than companies such as Anthropic or Meta. “They have this incredibly privileged access,” he said.
He further explained that Google’s extensive data access is a key factor behind Gemini’s performance relative to ChatGPT, arguing that the AI competition is driven more by data availability than by hardware, research, or other technological factors.
