Nationwide Transport Strike Disrupts Daily Life in Senegal

(MENAFN) A three-day nationwide strike by transport workers in Senegal, which began on Monday following a call from a major union federation, has significantly affected movement in the capital, Dakar, leaving many residents unable to commute.

With most public transport services halted, streets in the city have appeared unusually empty, according to reports. Union leaders had instructed that transport operations be suspended across the country, though a small number of drivers have continued working. Their limited activity, however, has not been sufficient to meet public demand.

The strike, supported by another transport union, stems from ongoing disputes over how the sector is managed, as well as the government’s refusal to officially acknowledge a newly established union created in February 2026.

Drivers have also raised concerns about what they describe as persistent harassment and corruption along national routes. Among their main demands is the swift implementation of previously agreed reforms, particularly those intended to reduce the number of roadside checkpoints.

Union officials say tensions escalated further due to restrictive government measures and a collapse in negotiations. Drivers have specifically criticized a nighttime ban imposed on certain minibuses, arguing that it lacks justification.

Earlier in the month, the federation pulled out of discussions with government representatives, accusing them of taking a “frivolous approach” and failing to follow proper procedures.

Although the strike had been announced ahead of time, authorities introduced contingency plans. According to reports, transport providers such as Dem Dikk, Aftu, and the Dakar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system were mobilized in an effort to maintain essential services and accommodate daily travel needs.
