Schumer Hails Rubio for Supporting Senate Approval on NATO Withdrawal

(MENAFN) Tensions are rising in Washington after renewed discussions about a potential US exit from NATO, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer highlighting past efforts to limit presidential authority on the issue.

Schumer expressed appreciation for Secretary of State Marco Rubio for previously supporting legislation that would require Senate approval before any move to withdraw from the alliance.

The remarks follow renewed controversy sparked by Donald Trump and his criticism of NATO.

In a 2023 post on X, Rubio had emphasized the importance of congressional oversight, writing: "No US President should be able to withdraw from NATO without Senate approval," Rubio wrote on the US social media company X in a 2023 post.

Responding on Wednesday, Schumer reaffirmed his position, stating: "I can promise this: The Senate will not vote to leave NATO and abandon our allies just because Trump is upset they wouldn’t go along with his reckless war of choice," Schumer wrote Wednesday on X.

He also acknowledged Rubio’s earlier role in advancing the proposal, adding: "for sponsoring the bill in 2023 requiring a two-thirds vote of the Senate to make sure clueless presidents couldn’t act on a whim."

In a television appearance on Tuesday, Rubio revisited his earlier views, noting that he once saw NATO as highly beneficial, describing it as offering “great value” by enabling the US to “project power into different parts of the world” when facing threats to national security.

However, Rubio suggested his perspective has shifted, arguing that the alliance is increasingly becoming a “one-way street,” particularly as some European governments show hesitation in backing US military actions against Iran.

Trump, for his part, has reportedly voiced frustration with allied nations, especially over their reluctance to deploy naval forces to safeguard oil shipments in the Strait of Hormuz. He has sharply criticized NATO members, describing them as “cowards” and a “paper tiger.”

In an interview, Trump reiterated his long-standing skepticism toward the alliance, saying: “I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and (Russian President) Putin knows that too, by the way.”
