Starmer, Oman's Sultan Address Iran Talks, Hormuz Tensions in Call
During the call, both leaders reviewed the peace discussions brokered in the Pakistani capital on Saturday, with both sides pressing Washington and Tehran to identify a viable path forward, according to a statement released by Starmer's office.
"It was vital there was a continuation of the ceasefire, and that all parties avoided any further escalation," the two leaders agreed.
On the question of protecting commercial shipping lanes, Starmer outlined ongoing multilateral coordination efforts, noting that recent meetings convened by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and British defense planners had kept allied partners aligned on restoring long-term freedom of navigation across the region.
Starmer also reaffirmed Britain's steadfast commitment to Omani security, briefing the Sultan on London's collaboration with Kyiv on drone warfare technology.
"It was clear Ukraine's expertise had been vital to the region in recent weeks, while Russia appeared to continue to support Iran's aggression," said Starmer.
The Islamabad talks — widely regarded as the most consequential direct engagement between Washington and Tehran since Iran's 1979 Revolution — failed to produce a breakthrough to halt the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which erupted on Feb. 28. Pakistan had earlier this week secured a fragile two-week ceasefire between the warring parties.
