OIC Rejects Israeli Envoy Appointment to Somaliland
In remarks shared on social media platform X, the OIC described the move as “a violation of the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” while also referring to Israel as the “occupying power.”
The organization reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s internationally recognized government, emphasizing backing for the country’s unity and legitimate state institutions. It also stressed the need to adhere to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, which require respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states.
The OIC further reiterated its solidarity with Somalia and called for compliance with international legal norms regarding diplomatic relations and territorial disputes.
The statement follows reports that Israel and Somaliland announced mutual recognition in December 2025, a development that has been firmly rejected by Mogadishu and criticized by several countries.
Israel also recently appointed its first ambassador to Somaliland, intensifying diplomatic controversy surrounding the region.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized internationally. Despite operating with its own governing institutions and security forces, it is still regarded by Mogadishu as part of Somalia’s sovereign territory. The Somali government continues to oppose any foreign engagement with Somaliland that bypasses federal authority, viewing such actions as violations of national sovereignty and unity.
