Iraq’s Coordination Framework Nominates Ali Al-Zaidi for Prime Minister
According to reports, the bloc announced its decision following what it described as an “important” meeting held at the government palace in Baghdad, a location it said symbolizes the continuity of state institutions and executive authority derived from the will of the Iraqi people.
During the gathering, members of the bloc praised the performance of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s government over the past three and a half years, highlighting its record in governance and state management.
The statement also commended what it called the “responsible historical positions” of State of Law Coalition leader Nouri Al-Maliki and Al-Sudani, noting their decision to withdraw from the race to lead the next government.
Maliki had previously been nominated by the alliance for the premiership, but reports indicated that his candidacy faced opposition from US President Donald Trump.
The bloc said the withdrawals reflected a commitment to national interests and an effort to overcome political deadlock, enabling the Coordination Framework to select a candidate capable of meeting the demands of the office and current national challenges.
The Coordination Framework remains the largest parliamentary grouping in Iraq, holding an estimated 130 to 140 seats in the 329-member legislature based on recent election results.
