Netanyahu Vows to Continue Southern Lebanon Offensive

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that military operations in southern Lebanon will proceed as planned, despite statements by US President Donald Trump suggesting that Israel and Hezbollah had reached an understanding to halt hostilities.

Addressing the situation, Netanyahu said he had spoken with Trump and reiterated Israel’s position regarding Hezbollah’s actions.

"I spoke this evening with President Trump and told him that if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and citizens, Israel will strike terror targets in Beirut,” he said, according to reports.

Netanyahu indicated that Israel’s policy had not changed and stressed that military activities would continue.

"Our position remains unchanged. At the same time, the army will continue to operate as planned in southern Lebanon," he added.

Earlier on Monday, Trump announced that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to stop attacking one another.

Reports also said that Netanyahu and Trump held a phone conversation focused on developments in Lebanon and Iran.
