China's August Jobless Rate Ticks Up to 5.3 Percent as Trade Surges
The jobless rate across the country's 31 major cities mirrored the national trend, also rising 0.1 percentage points month-on-month to reach 5.3% in August. Nationwide, employees at enterprises logged an average workweek of 48.2 hours during the period.
On the industrial side, value-added output among enterprises above a designated size expanded 5.2% year-on-year in August. The high-tech manufacturing sector stood out as a particular bright spot, posting a robust 16.7% annual increase in value-added output over the same period.
China's trade performance showed even sharper momentum, with total goods imports and exports surging 19.8% year-on-year in August — a pace that underscores continued external demand despite the uptick in domestic joblessness.
On inflation, the consumer price index edged up 0.8% year-on-year in August, while the producer price index rose more sharply, climbing 3.8% over the same period.
