Air Force Reveals Scale of Operation Epic Fury Amid Iran War
The operation is poised to become a case study in military scale, precision and speed, according to Gen. Ken Wilsbach, chief of staff of the Air Force, who addressed the Air, Space and Cyber Conference.
Wilsbach revealed that over 38 days of combat missions, the Joint Force struck more than 13,000 military targets. A fleet of 500 aircraft flew 10,000 sorties, sustaining a daily operational tempo exceeding 250 flights, he said, while ground personnel handled emergency repairs and carried out more than 420 reportable ordnance disposal missions under active fire.
Those combat operations unfolded during the broader Iran war, which erupted Feb. 28 with coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iranian leadership targets and infrastructure. While the campaign weakened Iranian military positions, American installations across the Gulf region and Jordan have absorbed retaliatory missile and drone barrages that significantly drained interceptor stockpiles and inflicted operational damage.
The fighting is part of a six-month conflict with Iran that has claimed the lives of 18 US service members and left 824 wounded since February 2026.
The US has officially decoupled Operation Epic Fury from the broader hostilities with Iran, even as it continues conducting strikes and maritime operations under separate designations such as Project Freedom and Overseas Operations.
To address emerging threats, Wilsbach announced the launch of the Point Defense Weapon System — a new platform integrating kinetic and directed-energy defenses to strengthen base security — alongside the creation of a dedicated point-defense career field within the service.
